Q. Is it legal to use topping lifts and downpoles on whisker poles?
A. With the removal of all restrictions to the whisker pole for 2008, according to PHRF-LO, a boat could rig an up haul or down haul for the whisker pole or a crew could hold it in such a position.
However, this works better in theory than in practice although there are some exceptions.
Class associations would need to rule on length, up and down haul, and whether or not crew could be a human up/down haul so there is a level playing field for boats that are class racing.
In the spring of 2008, the Central Council of Handicappers removed all restrictions with regards to whisker poles. This change was reviewed at the 2009 AGM, and a decision was taken to make the change permanent.
