Central Council handicaps the Melges IC 37 Class

The IC37 has arrived on Lake Ontario.

A Mark Mills design, built by Westerley Marine and FIBRE Mechanics, led by Melges Perfomance Sailboat.

These are now being prepared for the Canada’s Cup and will be sailed by some of the best sailors around.

This class of boats is unlike anything the PHRF rule was designed to rate.

As such PHRF-LO is approaching the rating of these boats differently from the normal procedure. Instead of the Handicapper from the club with the first boat doing the rating and then it going to a district meeting, and the Central Council, it will go straight to the Chief Handicappers and Central Council.

Owen Schneider (District Chief TORE) has been assigned to look after an initial temporary rating for the 2020 season, and head the rating investigation/research. This relieves the club handicappers of trying to rate a boat that does not fit the PHRF mold, as well as remove any influence as there are none in his district.

For specifics of the rating assignment please refer to in depth Handicap Review IC 37 by Melges (Melges IC37 CF -SB)

A special Central Council meeting shall be held this winter to formalize the rating for the 2021 season and beyond.

All current and potential owners are invited to work with their club handicappers to prepare submissions for this rating meeting as they see fit following the guidelines for a standard PHRF-LO rating appeal. The deadline for these submissions is October 31st, 2020.
